âVertigoâ star Kim Novak says this yearâs top Oscars contender, âThe Artist,â used sections of Bernard Herrmannâs love theme from âVertigoâ in its score in a move that she labels artistic ârape.â
In a new full-page ad with Variety magazine, Novak, 78, says the use of the music from the classic Alfred Hitchcock film is âcheatingâ and a violation of her âbody of work.â
âI want to report a rape,â the ad begins. âI feel as if my body â" or, at least my body of work â" has been violated by the movie, âThe Artist.â
âThe film could and should have been able to stand on its own without depending on Bernard Herrmannâs score from Alfred Hitchcockâs âVertigoâ to provide it more drama ...In my opninon, the combined efforts of the composer, director, Jimmy Stewart and myself were all violated.â

Novak starred  in the film as the mentally unstable wife of a wealthy shipbuilder in the film, with whom James Stewartâs character becomes obsessed.
Of the group she mentioned, Novak is the only living member  and added that she is âthe only one who can speak now.â
In response, âThe Artistâsâ director Michel Hazanavicius released a statement saying the film was âinspired by the work of Hitchcockâ and other directors and added that the âVertigo âLove Themeââ had âbeen used by many different filmsâ since its release in 1958.
âI respect Kim Novak greatly and Iâm sorry to hear she disagrees,â he added.
Novak said that despite the film giving âsmall credit to Bernard Herrmann at the end,â she believed it was âcheatingâ and a move to use âemotions [the theme] engenders as if it were their own.â
The silent film âThe Artistâ is widely considered to be the awards season front-runner, having earned several Golden Globe nominations and Oscar buzz.
