Vote for the best Golden Globes red carpet look - msnbc.com

By Kurt Schlosser

Another Golden Globe Awards ceremony is in the books. That means the only thing there's left to talk about is when you're going to see "The Descendants" or "The Artist" or "The Iron Lady" before the Oscars. Oh, and who looked best on the red carpet.

We took a quick spin through the fashions earlier Sunday night with a live blog aimed at showing some of the arrivals before showtime. Seems we managed to capture at least a few of the favorites out there. TODAY style editor Bobbie Thomas was on point with her fashion-minded tweets throughout the red carpet, and we turn to her here for a critique of the top six looks of the night.

So check out Angelina Jolie, Evan Rachel Wood, Tilda Swinton, Paula Patton, Charlize Theron and Claire Danes. And at the bottom of this post, vote for your favorite ... or name someone else who you liked better in the comments.

Angelina Jolie: #HeadTurner -- she’s a master of simple elegance, the Atelier Versace was a flawless fit and her red lips were a perfect accent.

Evan Rachel Wood: #DontMissDetails -- always sleek and edgy, from sequins to feathers -- she pulls off a gorgeous textured "scaled" gown.

Tilda Swinton: #AvanteGarde -- a fashion favorite and refreshingly original (as always) in a powder blue Haider Ackermann ensemble.

Paula Patton: #Fresh -- the rising star was in sync with a bold new color, and popped on the red carpet in Monique Lhuillier.

Charlize Theron: #RiskTaker -- not afraid of a big fashionable bow, Theron was stunning in a softly structured Dior.

Helen Mirren: #Timeless -- the ever graceful talent Mirren sweeps the carpet in a midnight blue Badgley Mischka dress, proving style knows no age.

Big Hollywood names claimed trophies at Sunday night's Golden Globe awards, with legends Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and George Clooney picking up honors.

Streep, who plays former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," won the award for best actress in a motion picture drama.

Clooney won the best actor award for his role in "The Descendants," and the film itself later won for best motion picture drama. In the film, Clooney plays a Hawaiian land baron who struggles with family issues as his cheating wife lies in a coma.

Scorsese won the Golden Globe for best director for "Hugo," his love letter to the early days of film.

Allen won the best screenplay award for "Midnight in Paris," but did not attend the show to pick up the trophy in person.

Before the big hitters started their treks to the podium, the honors were fairly evenly split between a number of different actors, movies and TV shows.

Michelle Williams won for actress in a musical or comedy as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn," 52 years after Monroe won the same prize for 1959's "Some Like It Hot."

Williams offered thanks for giving her the same award Monroe once won and joked that her young daughter put up with bedtime stories for six months spoken in Monroe's voice.

"I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and my life," Williams said.

Great quotes from the Golden Globes

The supporting-acting Globes went to Christopher Plummer as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in the father-son drama "Beginners" and Octavia Spencer as a brassy housekeeper joining other black maids to share stories about life with their white employers in the 1960s Deep South tale "The Help."

"With regard to domestics in this country, now and then, I think Dr. King said it best: 'All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.' And I thank you for recognizing that with our film," Spencer said.

"The Adventures of Tintin" won for best animated feature film, with director Steven Spielberg accepting the award.

"The Artist," an almost-silent black and white film, won the award for best movie musical or comedy, and another for Ludovic Bource's original score. Jean Dujardin also won a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical for the film.

Madonna claimed her second Golden Globe for her original song, "Masterpiece," from her film "W.E.," about the love affair of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.

"A Separation," from Iran, won the award for best foreign-language film. Writer-director Asghar Farhadi uses a divorcing couple's domestic troubles with a young child and an aging parent as the means to examine gender, religious and class distinctions in contemporary Iran.

Television awards were spread between new favorites and old standbys.

Fan favorite "Downton Abbey," PBS' look at the lives of servants and the wealthy family in a British manor house during World War I, claimed the award for best TV series, miniseries or TV movie.

Peter Dinklage won the best supporting actor award in a TV series, miniseries or movie for his role as Tyrion Lannister in HBO's "Game of Thrones." He said that his new daughter was with her first babysitter Sunday night "so I'm a little nervous." Dinklage also mentioned Martin Henderson, a dwarf in England who was picked up and tossed by a drunken stranger last fall. Henderson is now partially paralyzed.

"Modern Family" won the award for best TV comedy or musical, while "Homeland" won for best TV drama.

Claire Danes won the Globe for best actress in a TV drama for her "Homeland" role. She mentioned in her speech that she had won the same award at age 15 for her role in "My So-Called Life," and wanted to be sure to thank her parents since she had forgotten to thank them the first time around.

Recapping hits, misses from Globes

Laura Dern claimed the award for best actress in a television comedy or musical, for her role in HBO's "Enlightened."

Kate Winslet took home the honor for best actress in a TV series, miniseries or movie for her role in the remake of "Mildred Pierce."

The award for best actor in a TV drama went to Kelsey Grammer for "Boss."

Matt LeBlanc won the award for best actor in a comedy for "Episodes."

Idris Elba won for best actor in a TV series, miniseries or TV movie for "Luther."

Jessica Lange won the award for best supporting actress in a TV series, miniseries or movie for her role in "American Horror Story."

Ricky Gervais, who has ruffled feathers at past shows with sharp wisecracks aimed at Hollywood's elite and the Globes show itself, returned as host for the third-straight year.

While Gervais' comedy seemed toned-down from 2011, he started with some slams at the ceremony itself. Gervais joked that the Globes "are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing's been proved."

The Golden Globe Awards are given out by the roughly 90 HFPA members at a gala dinner and ceremony in Beverly Hills that is annually among the key events during Hollywood's awards season because of the media exposure it brings.

Honors bestowed on TV shows often lure audiences that can turn a little-seen program into a hit, and films and stars that are declared Golden Globe winners often go on to compete for Oscars, the world's top movie prizes given out later this year.

Offended? Gervais doesn't care

But veteran Hollywood awards watcher Tom O'Neil of website Goldderby.com notes that in recent years, as more awards shows have aired on TV and Oscar organizers have made changes to their nomination process, the HFPA's influence has waned.

"Six of the last seven years they haven't picked the same best movie. 'Slumdog Millionaire' is the only one," said O'Neil.

Kate Winslet Wants to Be a Man?! Plus, More Golden Globes Backstage Shockers - E! Online

January 15, 2012 7:15:00 PM by Joal Ryan

Kate Winslet is making big plans. Michelle Williams is defending Marilyn Monroe. Kelsey Grammer is making babies. (Or, at least babies news.)

A look at the doings and sayings backstage at the 69th Annual Golden Globes:

MORE: All Golden Globes news and pics, all the time

And He's Not Talking About Camille, Either: "There's a lot on my plate."â€"Boss winner Kelsey Grammer on his life, his series (about to start shooting season two)â€"and his baby-to-be. Make that, babies-to-be. Grammer lets it slip he and his wife are expecting twins.

So, Yeah, She Was Totally Robbed: Michelle Williams won for My Week With Marilyn; Marilyn Monroe wasn't even nominated for the movie's source material, The Prince and the Showgirl. Did the Globes snub Monroe, we ask Williams? "I have tremendous fondness for that performance," the actress says. "She's luminous."

Somebody's Been Doing Her IMDb Homework: Unprompted, Williams correctly points out that Monroe was honored on other occasions by the Hollywood Foreign Press, including once with the now-defunct World Film Favorite honor.

Albert Nobbs 2: The Sequel Has a Star!" I would like to one day play a man," Mildred Pierce winner Kate Winset confesses when asked about her as-yet unrealized ambitions.

At the Time, We Should Point Out, She Hadn't Seen the Show in a While: "Unless he's falling over and started drinking too much, I think he's doing OK."â€"Winslet, on Gervais, who hasn't exactly been winning over the insta-critics.

Er, Um...Sorry? Game of Thrones Peter Dinklage follows Williams to the press-conference stage, and he notices the room's different. As in, quieter. "You had so many questions for Michelle," he says.

After He Wins the Oscar, He'll Call It Even: "I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years."â€"Madonna on the possible consequences of beating Elton John for Motion Picture Original Song.

Whatever Happened to the Biggest Party of the Year?! So, how did Madonna immediately plan to mark her victory? "I'm going to go back to my seat," she says.

"Capt. Von Trapp" Would've Worked, Too: Reporters, to a writer, respectfully address 82-year-old Christopher Plummer not as "Chris," or "Christopher," but as "Mr. Plummer."

So, Yes, He Is Overall Familiar With How the Internet Works: We inform Mr. Plummer (natch) that the Twitterverse, its Joan Rivers wing included, has had nothing but nice things to say tonight about the Beginners winner. Does he appreciate how rare that is? "Usually," he tells us, "they have no nice things to say about me at all."

A Couple of Teases: Idris Elba, a winner for Luther, handles a question on whether he'll be the next James Bond by saying he'd be "honored to play the part," while Jessica Lange handles a question on whether she'll be back for season two of American Horror Story by saying "nothing is definite yet." (Uh-huh.)

Me. Ow: Homeland's Morena Baccarin gets a question on her dress, the one that's quite striking, and, um, well-ventilated, and she doesn't seem happy. "Well, I'm glad I get to talk about the real stuff," she purrs.

Geez, Let's Hope He Doesn't Think Everybody Always Dresses So Fancy: "This is my first time in California," says The Artist composer Ludovic Bource.

Modern Family's Sarah Hyland's Golden Globes Wardrobe Malfunction Caught on ... - E! Online

January 15, 2012 8:03:30 PM by Bruna Nessif

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

Welcome to Hollywood!

There's no guarantee that all will go as according to plan when walking along the Golden Globes red carpet. Just ask Modern Family's Sarah Hyland...

LOOK: 2012 Golden Globes Red Carpet Trend: Sky-High Hair!

Hyland was getting ready to an interview with E!'s very own Giuliana Rancic when suddenly, the zipper on the back of her dress decided to break. Whoops!

"Well I was just standing there waiting to come up here, and I just kinda felt like an explosion in my back," she told E! "And I was kinda just like, 'what happened!' And I felt my back and I felt bare back."

Luckily, she was able to grab her dress before it slipped off and a team was ready (with G's sewing kit in hand) to replace and fix the damage so no one could even tell that there was ever a bust (except that we have it all on camera).

Don't worry, Sarah. Our little secret.

Golden Globes: "Modern Family" wins for TV comedy - Los Angeles Times

Modern_family
ABC’s “Modern Family” won the Golden Globe award for best TV series â€" comedy or musical. It bested last year’s winner “Glee” (Fox), and rookies “New Girl” (Fox), “Episodes” (Showtime) and “Enlightened” (HBO).

Although this was the sitcom's first Golden Globe, the show has received numerous Emmys since its 2010 launch. The mockumentary series, largely credited with the comedy comeback on TV, features three households of members of the Pritchett clan. The show, created by TV veterans Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, is such a ratings force, it managed to outperform the much-hyped debut season of Fox’s “X Factor.”

The Golden Globes were held Sunday at the Beverly Hilton.

Peter Dinklage Shouts Out Dwarf-Tossing Victim In Golden Globes Speech - MTV.com

Peter Dinklage might have started off his Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night (January 15) with a charming anecdote about his mother telling him Guy Pearce was going to beat him for the best supporting TV actor award, but he ended it on a serious note. The "Game of Thrones" star gave a shout-out to fellow dwarf Martin Henderson but, rather then elaborating, he just said "Google him."

Within minutes, Henderson's name was a trending topic on Twitter. The aspiring actor was partially paralyzed on his birthday after a drunk stranger picked him up and threw him while he was having a cigarette outside a pub in the U.K. Henderson blames the English rugby team players who recently attended a dwarf-tossing contest during the rugby World Cup in New Zealand for inspiring the attack.

The Daily Mail reports that he now faces life in a wheelchair after the incident. Henderson was recovering from a 2010 back injury but has said that this injury has set him back in his recuperation. He went on to tell The Daily Mail that he believes this will affect his acting career.

"Every time I stand up I don't know if I'm going to fall over. I will have to use a wheelchair and I won't get any acting jobs," said Henderson, who has appeared in U.K. TV series "10th Kingdom" and "Bigger Breakfast."

British authorities are currently looking for the man who assaulted Henderson. The incident occurred on October 7, but Henderson's condition has reportedly worsened as the months have passed. He said that his legs became numb following the attack and that he now keeps falling over, even resulting in a recent fractured arm.

"I guess I was an easy target and the only reason I was picked on was because I am small," Henderson said in the interview. "People's attitudes to me when I go out can be pretty cruel. Most are OK but you get the odd idiot who will make fun and start laughing at me. You just have to ignore it, but this is the first time I have been picked up and thrown about."

Both Dinklage and Henderson suffer from achondroplasia, which causes dwarfirsm. Dinklage was likely trying to raise awareness for a cause that's close to his heart with the shout-out.

Michelle Williams Wins Golden Globe For Best Actress - MTV.com

Michelle Williams has come a long way since her "Dawson's Creek" days. On Sunday night (January 15), the pixie-haired actress took the stage to accept her prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for her chameleon-like turn as silver-screen icon Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn."

"I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl [Matilda Ledger], whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and in my life. I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job every day with a hug and kiss," she gushed in her Jason Wu gown. "I couldn't have done it otherwise. You kept me so excited to come home at night and for suffering through six months of bedtime stories where the princesses were read out loud in a Marilyn Monroe-sounding voice.

"I could go on and on," she continued, thanking everyone from producer Harvey Weinstein to her longtime pal and former "Dawson's" co-star Busy Phillips, adding, "I wish I could go on and on; there's so many people to thank. Thank you to Hollywood Foreign Press Association for putting in my hands the same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over fifty years ago. I'm honored."

In 1960, Monroe took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her iconic role in "Some Like It Hot." Williams has been nominated twice before, in 2005 for her work in "Brokeback Mountain" and again in 2010 for her role in "Blue Valentine." This is her first win.
