Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen are among the names who've been nominated for the prestigious Directors Guild of America Awards as the anticipation builds in the US ahead of the business end of the awards season. Though the Oscars of course takes pride of place on the calendar, the Directors Guild are known for being an accurate forecast of those who are likely to go on and do well at the Academy Awards with many in the past going on to receive nominations and wins.
Scorsese has been nominated for his film 'Hugo,' set in 1930s Paris and starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chloe Moretz. It's a gob smacking ninth nomination for the hugely acclaimed director in his career, with the 69 year-old having won on one of those occasions for his 2006 'The Departed.' The evergreen Allen meanwhile has received a nod for his much acclaimed picture 'Midnight In Paris,' the fifth 'Directors' nomination of his career but first since 1989's 'Crimes And Misdemeanours.' He too is a previous winner having taken the 1977 crown for 'Crimes & Misdemeanours.'
The revered pair will be up against some top competition though - not least Michel Hazanavicius whose silent picture 'The Artist' has been gaining huge plaudits since its release. Others in the running include David Fincher for 'The Girl In The Dragon Tattoo' - his second consecutive nomination following last year's 'The Social Network' - and Alexander Payne for his George Clooney-starring film 'The Descendants.'
