Houston actor makes 'Joyful Noise' with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah - Houston Chronicle

When you go see Joyful Noise - and you know you want to see that odd couple Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in a churchified musical - watch for the Houston-born Angela Grovey playing the choir choreographer.

In the trailers, that is a close-up of Grovey's booty that Latifah shooes away saying, "Get your Beyoncé out of my face."

Grovey plays Earla, who helps the church choir add some new moves when the singers prepare for a national competition in the film that opened Friday.

The ro le is a big break for the Elkins High School graduate who lives in New York, where she does a lot of theater work.

"It's huge. It's a major feature film with a national release," Grovey said. "It's just always nice when what you do is appreciated. It's nice to know I can be competitive in today's market."

And Parton and Latifah - she calls them Dolly and Dana - brought great energy to the project, Grovey said.

"It really was a creative process because we were in a choir together. So they were really there singing and dancing with us," Grovey said.

However, hearing Parton sing in rehearsals could make Grovey stop in her tracks.

"You'd be like, 'Oh, my God, I'm in the same room with Dolly Parton,' which was unbelievable."

Latifah would spend some of her downtime playing with the band. "She likes to play the drums so occasionally when we were changing a set or lighting angles, she would go over and jam out with our band on the drums," Grovey said.

Grovey hopes audiences feel the sense of fun in the film. "I think the message in this whole movie is about love and compassion for people wherever they are in their lives, and understanding that. We all have different ideas, but most of us have a good human spirit and just want the best for mankind."

Grovey studied at the Music Conservatory of Chicago College of Performing Arts and worked in Chicago a couple of years before moving to New York.

"I studied singing and dancing and acting, but most of my career is based in musicals," Grovey said. "Ninety percent of the time I'm singing. I love it. Love it. Love it."
