LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption Ellen Pompeo as Meredith on âGreyâs Anatomyâ with baby ZolaShonda Rhimes wasnât talking about the elephant in the room â" the upcoming end of contracts for âGreyâs Anatomyâ stars, including Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey â" on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association Winter Session, where she was promoting her new show for ABC, âScandal,â but she confirmed her own commitment to the medical drama.
âI think that weâre all interested in doing the show as long as the sho wâs interesting to do,â Shonda told a small group of reporters after the âScandalâ panel. âWhen Iâm done having interesting ideas for the show, I will be done with the show, but that doesnât necessarily mean the show will be done.â
Among those ideas, as revealed on last weekâs âGreyâs Anatomy,â was giving Seattle Graceâs power couple â" Meredith and Derek (Mer/Der) â" their adopted baby back.
âTheyâre going to get to be parents and I think youâre going to see a lot of joy from them,â Shonda told AccessHollywood.com. âAnd I think itâs a really good evolution for their characters.â
But how long will their happiness last?
âI think itâs going to last for a while,â Shonda told reporters. âItâs been a great evolution for their characters to see â" itâs been wonderful to see Mer edith as a mother and what that is and weâve been having a lot of fun with that. And Ellenâs amazing with the twins who play baby Zola⦠Sheâs amazing with those babies and has been turning in amazing performances all season and really been bringing it. Itâs been really fun to watch.â
While happiness is there for Mer/Der, Kim Raverâs character, Dr. Teddy Altman, is heading into a mourning period, following the death â" on the operating table, under Dr. Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) â" of her husband, Henry Burton, played by Scott Foley.
âI think itâs about what happens when something like that happens to you and whoâs to blame and how sheâs gonna deal with that,â Shonda told Access of Kim/Teddyâs upcoming storyline.
Still, she would have liked to have kept Scott and his character on the show.
âI want ed her [character] to be happy and I would have loved for the opportunity to keep Scott Foley, but it wasnât in the cards for us, unfortunately. Iâm dying to work with him again, because heâs amazing. Literally, like, amazing. People were like weeping on set that he was going, but yeah, itâs part of the plan for her character,â Shonda told Access. âWe have a story that weâre gonna tell and weâre excited about it.â
Shondaâs also excited about the upcoming alternate reality episode of âGreyâsâ which will see Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) come back to Seattle Grace.
âI think I really like the alternate reality episode thatâs coming up because I think itâs pretty amazing,â Shonda told reporters.
âScandalâ premieres Thursday, April 5 at 10:00 PM EST/PST, after âGreyâs.â
