Ricky Gervais on Returning to the Golden Globes: "What's the Worst That Could ... - Seattle Post Intelligencer

Is Ricky Gervais nervous about hosting the Golden Globes again? Not after last year.

"What's the worst that could happen?" Gervais told reporters Friday about his upcoming third turn as emcee at HBO's winter TV previews. "I end my career once a week, if you read the press. I only do things that end my career now. That's my fun. That's my extreme sport."

Who will he offend this year? Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes again

Gervais, 50, came under fire last year for his offensive jokes that skewered Hugh Hefner, Charlie Sheen, the cast of Sex and the City 2 and Scientologists, among others. The three-time Golden Globe winner said he thought he wasn't going to host the show again, but told reporters Friday that he changed his mind after he started reading articles saying he would never be invited back. "I did it to annoy them," he said of the press.

Just like last year, Gervais doesn't seem to be worried about going too far or offending anyone in the room Sunday night. "I think that everyone took it well. I don't know anyone that was really outraged last year," he said. "I'd rather they laugh than gasp, but I cherish the gasps along with the laughs."

Ricky Gervais doesn't think he went too far at Golden Globes

His jokes may hit hard, but The Office creator noted that they don't come from a bad place. "My conscience never takes a day off," Gervais said. "They're just gags. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings... or undermine the moral fabric of America."

When speaking about his upcoming HBO comedy, Life's Too Short, Gervais said he's actually a bigger fan of happy endings than most would imagine. "We're always on the side of good and goodness," Gervais said. "It's always about humanity. It's always about doing the right thing. And not doing the right thing and getting some sort of punishment down the line."

Added Gervais: "There's always hope for the worst people in the world."

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards air Sunday at 8/7c on NBC. Life's Too Short premieres on Feb. 19 on HBO.
