PASADENA â" Ricky Gervais says he still doesnât know exactly whom he offended when he hosted the Golden Globes last year - but that if he did offend somebody, âI donât care.â
Gervaisâ return to host the Globes a third time this Sunday night came as something of a surprise after some of his jokes last year were criticized as offensive.
Gervais told TV critics here Friday morning that âI wasnât going to come back, but then I read some people didnât want me to, so I did it just to annoy them.â
But seriously, he added, he doesnât know which celebrities he lampooned last year could be offended.
âWhat did I say that was so outrageous?â he asked. âEveryone I spoke with took it well.â
Anyhow, he said, the only critique that ultimately matters to him is his own.
âIf Iâm happy with my own performance,â he said, âIâm bulletproof. My conscience never takes a day off. I can defend every joke I do, as I did last year.â
He said his game plan for this year is the same as last year: âIâll do the monologue about the year, then introduce six to seven people through the night.â
It was noted that betting is currently under way about his targets, and Gervais recoiled.
âWhat sort of bet is that?â he said. âReally?â
He said he has people in mind, but added that âI wouldn't call them targets. Theyâre subjects.â
From his own perspective, he said, âWhatâs the worst that can happen? I end my career every week. I only do things that end my career â" itâs my extreme sport.â
The thing to remember, he said, is that heâs a comedian.
âIâd rather get laughs than gasps, but I cherish the gasps, too.â
