Last yearâs Lady Gaga-Madonna controversy, which involved the similarities between Gagaâs "Born This Way" and Madonnaâs 1989 hit, Express Yourself, has resurfaced as Madonna has opened up for the first time about her feelings toward the two hit songs.
"Born This Way" became an instant hit and topic of conversation soon after Gagaâs newest song hit the radio. Celebs, such as American Idol alum Chris Daughtry, took to Twitter to express his views on the newest hit. Back in February, Daughtry tweeted, âJust listened to a clip of Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' and I gotta say...sounds a lot like 'Express Yourself' from Madonna. Thoughts?â So what does Madge have to say about this, nearly one year later?
According to Fox News, Madonna stayed mum on the idea that Gaga had âripped her off.â In an interview with Newsweek, Madonna notes that she thought âthis is a wonderful way to redo my song (âExpress Yourselfâ). I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it wasâ¦interesting.â
On the other hand, Madonnaâs brother, Chris Ciccone, had a little more to say about the alleged ârip offâ of his sister's song. According to Fox, Ciccone tells E!News, âThey should have noticed, somebody should have noticed that the songs are so remarkably alike. They should have pulled it or at least said, 'Change it.'â Ciccone adds, âI was like, '"Express Yourself," wow.' And it's not like it's a direct copy, but it's more like that song than any other song I've ever heard before.â
Ciccone notes that he is a âGaga fanâ and doesnât want to give the wrong impression, while Gaga reps dispute that the pop-diva has always looked up to Madonna as a musical icon.
It has been nearly a year, do the similarities bother you? Should Madonna have more to say regarding the song?
