Tomorrow night, Ricky Gervais will take the stage as host of the Golden Globes. As last year’s emcee, he dished out pointed commentaries on a host of celebrities including Robert Downey Jr and Tim Allen. This time around, he’s promising more of the same, but it almost never happened. After the curtain fell last January, numerous commentators argued Gervais would never be invited back. His jokes were too pointed and his trashing of The Tourist, a film actually nominated that night, too aggressively undermined the seriousness of the evening. At least that was the word on the street, but after Franco and Hathaway underwhelmed at the Oscars, many insiders began thinking maybe edgy would be better than boring.

That’s why Gervais was invited back to host the Globes this year, and that’s why Eddie Murphy was originally picked to host the Oscars. The movie star and stand-up comedian’s willingness to take the gig generated a lot of excited headlines, but unfortunately, after producer Brett Ratner fell into hot water over a homophobic comment, he was axed and Eddie departed in his wake, leaving the Academy little choice but to turn to stand-by Billy Crystal. This time around will be his ninth turn at bat, and by now, we all pretty much know what to expect. He’ll be funny, a bit goofy and respectful of the evening.
