Michael C. Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a police department blood spatter expert who moonlights as a serial killer, on 'Dexter.'

PASADENA â€" Showtime’s serial killer dramedy “Dexter” will likely meet its own end after the next two seasons, network Entertainment President David Nevins said Thursday.

Or not.

Nevins told TV critics that “we now know the end game” of the show and it will probably happen at the conclusion of its recently announced two-season extension.

“But notice I said ‘likely endpoint’,” Nevins added. “We’re keeping our options open.”

“Dexter,” which launched in 2006, had its sixth season this fall. It stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a police department blood spatter expert who moonlights as a serial killer.

He mostly just kills people who need killing, but nonetheless, his avocation has induced enough potential complications that at some point his story probably needs to be resolved.

Nevins said the bigger immediate complication next season will involve Dexter’s relationship with his adoptive sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter).

“We felt it was time to shake up what Dexter goes through and make him less of a lone wolf,” said Nevins, who promised “a big reveal” at the end of the seventh season that will launch next fall.
